Training for a Half Marathon

For the past couple of months, the gym workouts regularly were becoming more of a nuisance and less motivating and I knew something needed to change. After dealing with clogged duct issues and mastitis from nursing my little for over a month, I decided that I wanted to get back into running.

I told my husband that it was time, I was no longer going to put it off...I want to run a half marathon. Every Saturday is our long run. I ran 5 miles the first week with him. I struggled here and there. I'd be lying if I didn't say it didn't hurt sometimes while running. When I finished, I felt great! I had never run 5 miles before. It is time to bust through all limitations.

Right now the pain threshold for me is 2 miles. After two miles the endorphins have really kicked in and I'm feeling great!

The next week (last Saturday), I ran 5.6 miles with my husband. I walked into church on Sunday and my sister said I had lost a whole lot of inches. Yay! I'll take that!

Monday, we went running with all 8 kids (Braedon in the stroller)--2.50 miles. Tuesday was Zumba and my shins hurt so bad I barely crawled out of class. I took a rolling mat at the gym and rolled my shins front and back letting it hit all the pressure points. It hurt so bad, but when I finished I was relieved. I used Wed. & Thurs. and recovery days and Friday I walked 1.75 miles with my hubby. Doing all this was perfect because...today I ran 10K's!!! 6.2 miles!!! It was about the same time as last week in how long it took us, but we added half a mile. I've never run this far and I feel great!

Some things I'm doing & learning:

  • Take water and water stops, so I plan my route around that.
  • Ease into it, don't push myself too hard...I'm going for distance so I have to pace myself.
  • The best electrolyte replenisher is coconut water (I like the Naked Coconut water).
  • Icing up after a workout will save you on muscle soreness.
  • Stretch often, even during a run if you feel tight.
  • Wear sunscreen so you don't go to church sunburned every Sunday (like me!)
  • Read the book: Marathoning for Mortals
It is so weird finishing a run and wiping my forehead that is saturated with salt.  It's time to replenish!

More soon, but I had to let you know that I'm still out there working hard!

Clogged with yesterday's excess, the body drags the mind down with it. ~Horace
