Friday Stats

>> November 28, 2008

We had a lovely Thanksgiving! That was a free calorie day! I was FREELY eating! :)

Today I spent almost twelve hours shopping the black Friday sales. I was up and at the mall with a friend by 4:30 AM. My goal was to get some gorgeous boots to wear when I pick my hubby up from the airport. I found them at JC Penney! I found some black knee high boots with heels that were originally $100. With all the discounts I paid----$34!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Isn't that awesome? I was also buying a cute outfit for the "pick up" day! :)

So, I'm going to count some of that shopping for calories too...

Shopping calories burned:

1,645 calories

(Just about covers my breakfast at McDonald's ROFL)

I love working out though. I feel its like repentance for any of my eating indiscretions or past eating sins.

Tonight's workout:

Elliptical: 5.84 Miles 637 Calories 43 Minutes
Cybex: .91 Miles 163 Calories 15 minutes
Weights (biceps, triceps) 18 Calories 5 minutes

Rules of Music When Working Out

>> November 24, 2008

These were some hilarious but true tips on some good rules for music when working out. After last week's gym experience I confessed I was laughing as I read it. All of "those" people who have to listen and are disturbed are people like me. I can't handle some of it, I really, really try, but its like nails on the chalkboard.

The rules of music when working out:

1. 140 bpm: For upbeat music try the keep the beats per minute (BPM) of the music over 140bpm.

2. Consistent rhythm: Continual beats are often better than frequently changing beats as your mind will naturally zone in and out as needed. A sudden shifting in beats may distract you from an important part of the workout.

3. Do not sing out load: I don’t care how good the song is, your voice may not be!

4. Don’t have the music so loud that others can hear it: not everyone likes the faint ‘doof doof’ of music next to them on the bike.

5. Be aware of how you sound (even if you aren’t singing): Does your breathing resemble a charging bull? Are your feet slapping on the ground like flippers?

6. When training outdoors keep the sound low for safety reasons: Traffic and pedestrians should be kept under close observation.

Monday's Stats

First, I thought I'd share a couple of tips I learned from going to the gym on a regular basis.

1) Some days are DEFINITELY harder than others, but keep going, you will eventually feel better!

2) Tuck extra cords from the iPod speakers into your shirt. I usually follow this rule, but forgot today after 3 phone calls in a row. They get caught on your machine and get ripped out one ear at a time. Its quite surprising.

3) Listen to positive, peppy, I love life music. Otherwise it's a depressing work out and can slow you down.

4) Challenging yourself can be fun. Even if you do only a tenth of a mile more than last time it feels good knowing you did better than the last time.

5) Lifting weights forces the fat into a prettier shape when you turn it into muscle.

Now for the stats:

Elliptical: Miles: 5.83 Calories: 623 Minutes: 43
St. Bike: Miles: 3.93 Calories: 160 Minutes: 20
Cybex: Miles: 1.82 Calories: 328 Minutes: 30

Walk to and from gym: Miles: .20 Calories: 20

Good news (I think)!

I went to a thrift store today and found these AMAZING boots, just my size and in great shape. So I bought them. $10 - a real find. Of course, that also meant I needed to buy some skirts to go with them! I bought 3 skirts size 11-12.

Guess what? I brought them home and they didn't fit! Too big! Woohoo! :)

Unfortunately that doesn't mean that I've been sticking to my diet or getting much exercise. But at least I'm not as big as I think I am. I'll take it. (Of course, it could be that those skirts were labelled wrong and not really that size, but I'm not going to go there....)

I've been quite sick with strep throat and tonsilitis the past couple of weeks, and the medication was doing me in. I was having a reaction to the antibiotics and my blood pressure was dropping. The cure? Eat more (ugh) and increase salt intake (double ugh). Neither one of these is high on my "get healthy" list, but I had to follow doctors orders.

Tonight I am getting hubby to drag my treadmill out into a more accessible location. I know I will use it if I can get to it easily. :)

Hope you all are doing well! Will check in later. I'm still avoiding my scale.... :)

Back in Business

Last week was truly insane!!!! I'm amazed I made it three times to work out! But the good news was I did burn 3000 calories for the workouts.

I had a small surgical procedure done on Tuesday, so I couldn't work out. Wed. and Thurs. I did, but I've still had some pain the entire weekend. Thursday I had my Colloquia. Friday was spent solely trying to get my scroll saw working again to get the 53 nativities cut out for the Super Saturday. Literally sun up till sundown was spent on that. Saturday I spent over 9 hours putting together, putting on, and cleaning up after the Super Saturday. I crawled into bed very early that night. Sunday was recoup day, not that I ever work out on Sunday, but it was a nice rest day. I did experiment on a Gluten Free pie crust and made a gluten free lemon meringue pie for dinner. The kids were so excited to have me cooking all day, they love to help! Bella is now a pro at turning my mixer on and off!

Anyway, I plan to keep it up this week and drink more water. I slacked on that this week.

Interesting Experience at the Gym Today

>> November 19, 2008

I can work out with people of all kinds at the gym. We share a common goal and share a common space. The only people I have a difficult time working out with are the loudly vocal and the WEIRD.

I go to the gym an average of 5 times a week. The staff knows me and I know the people who go fairly often. More often than not, I'm alone and have the gym to myself.

There is this one guy who has come once in the past. He irritated me. I call him "Weird stretching guy". He used the treadmill and the floor for the most bizarre stretches (poses) I have ever seen that lasted 20 minutes.

Today I was about 1/3 of the way through my work out when in walks "Weird stretching guy". I silently hoped I wouldn't have to witness another stretching session. Thankfully, this one was only five minutes and he started running on the treadmill.

There are three treadmills and a new mom was on the out left tread. and he was on the outer right tread. I had to get in the middle. It was then that he started running like Fred Flintstone and then singing!!!! I tried turning up my music a little, but to no avail, he was too loud and obnoxious. Then he started doing his bizarre poses while he was running!! I finished my time on the treadmill and put my sweatshirt on the Cybex to hold my place and I went to the bathroom to get away from him for a few minutes. I thought about leaving my bag and decided against that and took it with me.

When I came back to my relief and dismay he was gone and so was my sweatshirt. I looked out the window and saw him get into his truck with what looked like my sweatshirt! I dismissed it thinking that maybe he thought I left and turned it into the office.

I finished my workout and took the TV remote control to the office and asked them if someone brought my sweatshirt. No one had seen it. We found the maintenance guy and he didn't see it. Then we watched on the security cameras that "stretching guy" steal my sweatshirt, very nonchalantly. I couldn't believe it!

I had to walk home and it's 40 degrees here and I was in a t-shirt. One of the office ladies insisted I borrow her t-shirt so I wouldn't freeze to death. Another reason I don't like that dude. They are keeping their eyes out for him. I didn't have time to file a police report and I thought it was silly. That sweatshirt is 10 years old. Its still violating!

10 Reasons it's Hard to Lose Weight

This is a great article and very motivational for me!

http://exercise.about.com/od/weightloss/a/10_weightloss.htm

It mentioned reasons why you would want to lose weight OTHER than for the loss itself. Some of my reasons would be:

1) To surprise my hubby
2) To get and stay healthy enough to have another baby (baby #8)
3) To feel good and avoid depression.

I was on a site (self.com) talking about losing weight with cardio. I was so impressed with this lady's comment I wanted to share it here:

This tip is sooooo true! I used to just strength train and diet, and I was barely dropping the pounds. I have now added in 30-60 minutes of cardio (elliptical and recumbent bike are my faves) a day, at least 5 days a week. Sometimes on the weekends I become a gym rat for almost 2 hours, doing circuit training. It's been two weeks since I made this addition and I have dropped approx. 10 pounds. I definitely credit the cardio workouts, along with the healthy amount of fiber and strength training, for my success.

I took some of her advice and added a little more to my routine tonight since its the weekend.

I'm drenched...off to shower/change!

Inches lost
Right arm - 1/2 inch
Left arm - 1 inch (don't know why it is different)
Bust - 1 inch
Middrift (above the waist) 1 inches
waste - 2 1/2 inches (don't know if I spelt that right)
Stomach - 1 inch
Hips - 1 inch
legs the same

TOTAL LOST - 8 INCHES and a loss of 9 pounds (taken from my highest weight because I have lost and gain, lost and gain since starting this, so actually the weight loss is more but I am taking it from the highest weight).

Why I am telling everyone this? Because this is the point where I start to trip myself up. I don't know why...I even see myself doing it. Like last night, I was not hungry but I ate anyways...why do I do this????? I need help getting past this point! I need to tell myself that I am worth it...but I don't understand myself in working so hard to mess it all up? Any solutions?

>> November 08, 2008

I lost 3 pounds this week! I don't really know what happened... I guess I finally just got tired enough of feeling unhappy to do something about it. I have been hungry more often than I should have been, but doing ok. I struggle with "moderation". LOL. If I want to lose weight, I want to do it NOW and then I start to starve, until a small voice (probably God's) in the back of my head says... hey, don't do this. Your body is not to be mistreated.

So these are the things that helped me this week:
- going for walks to the grocery store to pick up more "healthy snacks"
- reading a book on getting healthy (just like reading the bible keeps me on track spiritually, reading books keeps me thinking intentionally about diet and exercise)
- eating one portion of food, followed by a glass of water, and then waiting 10 minutes before deciding on seconds. Usually I'm full.
- thinking about the next day's meal plan the day before - again, keeps me intentional in my eating.

The book I'm reading also has some great ways to make permanent healthy changes to lifestyle without it being painful. I hope to have more time very soon so that I can share them!

So my update:
weight: 160 lbs
traget: 140 lbs

Calculating Calories Needed

I'm not one to spend money on WW because I am a self propelled person and like to figure things out on my own...or should I say the hard way? :) I found a site today that calculated my level of activity, my age, weight, sex, etc. and then tells me what caloric intake I need to maintain and what to eat to lose. I was happy to see the maintain was quite high for me. Here is the site:
How to Calculate Your Daily Caloric Intake Needs

And here are my calories allowed:

2118 Calories/day
1271 - 1694 Calories/day

Now I don't feel too bad about only 1200 calories yesterday...but I wasn't hungry and felt full most of the day. Hope this helps!

No Work and All Play...

>> November 05, 2008

I have not been working on myself, and I need to be. We are almost at the end of 2008 and I said this was going to be *my year* and it has not been. So, here I am 5 November and still at the same place I have been for 3 years now... We had a wounded warrior walk/run last weekend and it was 3.5 miles, and we did it in 1 hour. I would like to keep doing it, I think 3.5 miles is a good workout. I am lacking motivation and it is a big bummer. I slipped back into a depression about 3 weeks ago (at least that is when I noticed it) and so I started taking my meds again. I feel 100% better, now I just need to add exercise to my life and I would feel 150% better! Anyway, Im sorry I am not motivating or have an inspirational story, but I hope sometime soon I will. Take care!

I gave up the stringent diet that I was cheating on constantly. Now I feel like a "recovering" psycho dieter only without the guilt of cheating on it. I will still eat similar to what I was eating before, but without the Nazi "DON'T CHEAT or YOU WILL DIE" feeling. And on that note, I only ate 4 pieces of candy yesterday, but I ate too much food! ROFL! Now I will burn it off at the gym and now for the rest of the week it's soup and salad for me! ;)
