Run, Mama, Run!

"Man imposes his own limitations, don't set any" ~Anthony Bailey

I've had several challenges with getting back into the running scene again. I have overcome them all, so I'll name them now: moving across country with my hubby, 7 kids and 2 cats zapped my energy. Second, getting used to a higher altitude. Third, pregnancy- which isn't a trial for women who were runners before pregnancy. So, really the third isn't a challenge. :)

Anyway, I went on a two mile run with my family today. I felt so wonderful afterward! Being 5 months pregnant I felt a little pressure on the bladder at first, but once I got going, the pressure went away.

This Week: Update

>> February 04, 2010

I slowed down a bit lately since hubby's been home helping me set up the house after the move. Monday or Tuesday I went running. Not too far since my pelvic bone was sore that day. I still ran a mile and felt so good afterward. Next week, we'll be able to settle into a new and normal routine- the first since we moved her 1 1/2 months ago.

Elliptical and Weights for Tuesday

>> January 27, 2010

We went to a different gym today and I hopped on a new elliptical.  It was slower going for me due to the stride- it was very far apart.  {Almost like skiing}  I did 2 miles there followed by 20 minutes of weights {arms, legs, hips}.  It was a great workout and didn't take too much out of me.

Today's totals:

Miles: 2
Calories: 195

Salsa & the Elliptical

>> January 20, 2010

I've been slowly working back up to a longer workout. Tonight I went to the gym with my husband. I got on the elliptical for 35 minutes before the cardio Salsa class tonight. By the time class started I was more than warmed up. There were many moves I was familiar with from Zumba, and several that took a little practice to get. It was fun, but I think I'd rather take Zumba more. We'll see how my schedule works out.

Tonight's Stats:

Elliptical: Miles-2.47 Calories-254 Minutes-35
Cardio Salsa: Calories-211 Minutes-60

Totals:

Miles-2.47
Calories-465

Cardio Boxing

>> January 19, 2010

I went to a Cardio boxing on Friday. That was a major workout! It was a great way to let out aggression too. What was more amazing to me was the calories burned! 650! Wow!

Cardio-boxing is a great way to condition the whole body because it builds muscle strength, endurance, balance, agility and coordination all at the same time.

Cardio-boxing has also been shown to promote well-being because it builds confidence and discipline. Most cardio-box programs consists of variable heart rate work and actual boxing techniques.

Quotes from Cardio-Boxing for Super Fitness by Gary Matthews

It was a lot of fun and I plan to keep doing it. I can't kick as much now that I'm getting further along. It's so amazing to think I'm half way through my pregnancy.

Stats for Friday:

Cardio Boxing Class: Calories-650 Minutes-60

Spinning Wednesday Night

>> January 14, 2010

So I took my first spin class in CO and it's been two months since I've been on a spin bike. All I can say today is ouch...my hiney!

The bikes are a little different from what I'm used to so it took a few minutes to feel comfortable. I have had some excellent spin teachers and some mediocre teachers, but the teacher we had on Wednesday night was the worst. We had a thick Hispanic accent, which in and of itself isn't so bad, but he also had a high pitched voice and I couldn't understand 90% of what he said screamed except, "Up, go go go go!". His music was pretty good and upbeat. My husband seemed to like the Big Butts song we spun too. LOL

This man was also highly overweight and stopped many times during class and shouted instructions to keep going. If I can do the whole class pregnant, I would hope my teacher would. It was interesting.

It was very hot in the class and by the time we left my face looked like this:

Guess whose supposed to teach Salsa tonight? I haven't decided if I'm going or not. I have a lot of projects going on.

Wednesdays stats:

Spin: Miles-15 Calories-550 Minutes-60

Yoga Love and Running

>> January 11, 2010

Got my favorite magazine in:

Even my teen is enjoying the articles in it. Hubby's jealous because he wants a running magazine for men. I also get Runner's World. Is there one specifically for men?

This morning Ben and I went to Yoga together. It was his first time. He liked it but he thinks of it only as stretching. I think differently. I was impressed with his flexibility.

Our teacher is quite pregnant, but can do yoga better than most of the class. Afterward she gave me some tips and advice on what I should and should not do when doing yoga, especially now that I'm in the 2nd trimester.

We are so going back. We both agreed our backs felt much better with the stretching and the sense of well-being was amazing afterward.

This evening, we went on a 2 mile run as a family. I love running. It felt so great!

Monday (today's) Stats:

Yoga: Calories-176 Minutes-60
Run: Miles-2 Calories-200 Minutes-35

Total:
Miles-2
Calories-376
Minutes-95

Healthy Pregnancy - The Holistic Way

by Dr. Kavita

Pregnancy is the time when every woman cherishes her womanhood and her exclusive capability to give birth. Experiences of pregnancy are treasured for a lifetime and conveniently ruminated over too.

So how does one make this privileged phase of life even more exceptional and special? The prime and uppermost concern turning around in the mind of any mother-to-be is singularly, regarding her yet-to-be born baby. The health of the baby, weight of the baby, whether the delivery would be normal and so on is the usual run of the mill worry during pregnancy.

Only a healthy mother can give birth to a healthy baby, but pregnancy is the time when even the robust of women are indisposed with some health complaint or the other. In addition to maintaining a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise, what every pregnant women needs is a stress buster technique.

Pregnancy by itself is a huge stress on the woman's body and mind. When the new mother is already in a stressful job or stressful life situations or maybe even going through a personal or financial crisis, this additional stress of pregnancy becomes too much to handle.

Research shows that excessive stress can not only lead to miscarriages and pre term deliveries, but also can cause low birth weight in the babies. Babies born to stressed out mothers are prone to develop more serious medical conditions like Schizophrenia in later life.

The physical stress of pregnancy shows its effect on the connective tissues in general and the pelvic muscles, lower spine and pelvic joint in particular.

Pains, aches and fatigue become a common feature, limiting movement and also well needed sleep. Flexibility is the mantra to an easy pregnancy, smooth child birth and trouble free puerperium or post natal period.

Despite the fact that every pregnant mother knows the benefit of exercises, fatigue and various bodily discomforts can actually cause an ebbing of stamina and will power to follow a regular workout regime.

Yoga is a holistic way of life, with emphasis on synchronization of body, mind and soul. There are various branches of Yoga like, Pranayama or the breathing exercises, Mudras or the hand postures and Hatha yoga or the physical exercises. The beauty of this wonderful science is in its simplicity. Pranayamas can be done by anyone in the world and can be calibrated according to the stamina of the practitioner.

Numerous benefits of Yoga during Pregnancy

1. Safe and suitable during pregnancy
2. Soothes body, mind and soul.
3. Can be done easily even during advanced pregnancy.
4. Reduces stress.
5. Relaxes muscles and tissues.
6. Increase blood flow and optimizes circulation.
7. Boosts the stamina and energy levels.
8. Improves digestion.
9. Reduces Flatulence, nausea, acidity and other digestive complaints usually associated with pregnancy.
10. Easy to learn and simple exercises.
11. Increases the lung capacity and oxygenates the blood.
12. Keeps the skin healthy and glowing.
13. Induces normal and refreshing sleep.
14. Yoga nidra- which is actually a deep state of relaxation of the body energizes the body and refreshes the body in lesser time when compared to ordinary sleep.
15. Rejuvenates and replenishes the body, mind and soul.
16. Slows down the aging process and gives a longer span of life. Makes the mother healthy and thereby helps in having a healthy baby.

I'm in my second trimester of pregnancy and running- not as much as before I became pregnant, but I'm still enjoying a nice run. I'm on a great site called Mom Bloggers Club and in the group Running Mommies, a fellow pregnant runner wrote the following article. I appreciated the timing of it.

20/20/20 and Happy New Year

>> January 09, 2010

Well, I've been gone for over a month due to a long move across the country and horrible nausea from pregnancy. In spite of that fact, I did manage to run twice in December totaling 2 miles. All is not lost, though, I sure needed the extra energy I wasn't burning for that move.

I had intended on working out more once I got here, but the two runs I did do showed me my lungs weren't adjusted to the altitude yet. Hubby goes back to work Monday and I can officially start my new routine in Colorado, which I will start with Spin class first thing in the morning.

I'm now four months pregnant, wow that went fast! Today hubby and I went to the local gym to start spin class and after we got there and realized spin was full but there was another class, I went for it. To start out this new year with a BANG, I did 20/20/20 which is 20 minutes of step aerobics, 20 minutes of kick boxing with weights, 20 minutes of weights, abs and stretching. Wow. That was "glut" kicking. I'll be feeling it tomorrow for sure. It felt so good to be working out again, though. Yay!

Today's workout:

20/20/20: Calories-489 Minutes-55

Yipe!

>> November 30, 2009

Sorry to not keep this blog updated. We're moving in two weeks over 1800 miles and I had some terrible bouts of morning sickness which I'm over now. In spite of all that going on, I did work out a little.

I ran 3.20 miles on Sat. November 21st and last week I was only able to work out once. Poor me- I was so sick last week. I went on Wednesday to the gym and did 4 miles on the bike and ran .50 miles on the dreadmill.

I received a blessing by my husband on Saturday and felt well enough to go to church and by this morning I felt 90% better! I felt good enough to run 2 miles and do 20 push-ups and 20 minutes of abs. I'm so thankful! This week is going to be great! Oh, I took three of my older kids running with me this morning.

Here are today's stats followed by the mileage total since my last update.

Run: Miles-2 Calories-200 Minutes-25
Calisthenics: Calories-80 Minutes-20
Push-ups: 20 Calories-10

Total for today:

Miles-2
Calories-290
Minutes-55

Miles since last update: 9.70

Good Heart Rate and Tuesday's Workout

>> November 17, 2009

Did I mention my first prenatal appointment on this blog? She checked my blood pressure- really good it was 107/60. She asked me if I worked out after taking my blood pressure and I said yes. She said my heart rate is awesome at 53~! This is going to be the BEST pregnancy yet! I've worked so hard to get healthy and will continue working out. It lessens the nausea and makes me feel sooo energetic.

Tonight, I went to the gym with my husband. Not much exciting happened there. There was a gym-ful of half naked basketball players next door. Not that I was watching-gross- but they were loud.

Oh, I take it take it back, we did have something happen. We brought 6 of the 7 kids with us. Half of them were in pajamas and all supposedly passed "dad's" inspection. I hopped on the arc trainer and noticed Athena (the autistic 6 year old) wearing her baby sisters sleeper! It was stretched too tight, but she was happy as a clam in it. No way- she had to go home and change. LOL

Anyway, I had a great hour long cardio session followed by calisthenics (abs and push-ups). I also ran a mile. I took a two week running break due to nausea- but I'm back. I don't like falling behind. Here are Tuesday's stats:

Arc Trainer: Miles-1.17 Calories-345 Minutes-30
Run: Miles-1.01 Calories-102 Minutes-15
Elliptical: Miles-1.63 Calories-181 Minutes-15
Calisthenics: Calories-100 Minutes-20

The month of October was very busy for me with my husband coming home and my in-laws visiting, then my husband going on leave.  Even when I did go to the gym, I noticed I was dragging just a little bit.  This weekend we figured out why. I'm so excited, especially because I am in good health. Now my focus is to keep up what I'm doing while going through this new journey. :)

This month my goal is to work harder than I did last month! LOL!   I started it out right by going to the gym this morning. I love working out, I wish I didn't put it off so much last month.
